Work In Progress

Today I completed the first draft of my work in progress.

There's still a long way to go, including several more drafts and a good deal of further research, but for the moment I'm enjoying the euphoria of having typed, "The End".

A celebration is in order.

  1. Have a great Christmas, Shayne.

When the fuss dies down - could you email me (jomcarroll[at]waitrose[dot]com - I want to write something with a section set in New Zealand, and I could do with info regarding history etc - Nothing too alarming, but I could do with somewhere to begin!

    Thanks, Jo

  3. Whoo hoo! I'm so excited for the both of us! I can't wait to see what my favorite characters have been up to! OK, I'm going to sound like a child now but, how much longer?? :-)

  4. Thanks, Mary! It's nice to be able to share the excitement. :-)

Still a few months yet, I'd say. But I was editing on Christmas Day, so there's dedication!

  5. That IS dedication! When I'm reading my book, I will remember that you worked so hard to get it into my hands! I hope that your family forgives the crazy fan who Can't. Wait. to read your masterpiece! LOL.

  6. I just finished Second Chances last night. Live in Newfoundland it has been a real treat to imagine the world Amy lives in. Though I have to say and the end of the book I was wondering what happened to Susannah and Thomas, and does Sarah ever meet that special someone? The questions kept me awake half the night. Thanks so much for writing a book that not only took me to a new place but also made me think about it long after I turned off my ereader.

  7. Thanks, Kat! That's great to hear.

It's endlessly fascinating to me, the range of characters and future events different readers wonder about. I'm particularly fond of Thomas, and though he doesn't actually appear in the work-in-progress we will see more of him (and Susannah) eventually. For the rest: Sarah would tell you that she's perfectly contented as she is. Take that as you will. :)

  10. Hi Shayne! I just finished the 4 books in the series in about a week and a half. I have 3 kids, so that's a lot of naptime/bedtime reading. Late nights but I couldn't put them down! I am now a dedicated fan and I can't wait to see what happens to the characters who I feel are my friends now. You are very talented and I can tell these books were a labor of love for you. Thank you so much for the amazing experience I have had through your words!

  11. Hi Carrie, and thanks for your lovely comments! Thank you for spending so much of your precious time with my characters - with three kids, sleep must be a scarce resource for you!

  12. Hi Shayne

A new follower here :) I found your blog after finding your FANTASTIC instructions re the W-7 form and had to come to thank you :) I got my first one back last week (it was rejected ;p) so had a hunt for instructions I could understand *lol* so thank you so much for putting them on the net! I'd like to post a link to them on my blog, if that's okay with you? I'll be sure to provide links back to your website/blog.

    Many thanks

    Nicole

p.s - congrats on the first draft!

    1. It's great to hear that the instructions were useful, Nicole! Figuring out how to fill in that form was quite a mission, and I hoped that I could save others a certain amount of frustration. :)

Yes, I'd be very happy for you to post the relevant links.

And thanks. :) I'm deep into editing now...

  13. Hi Shayne,
Loved your Promises to Keep series. I will forever remember these characters. I am so happy to know that you are working on your next novel in the series. I wanna read it!
One comment: A minor character that I truly loved in The PTK series was Harry. He was an 1800 "Bad Boy". I so wanted Amy to talk to him, but it was just not to be..., but I did so want to kick Charlie, even when he was dying, I wanted Amy to slap him or something (I had serious issues with Charlie - I am glad he is dead) - but Amy was just not that type of girl.
    Loved, loved, loved your writing.
Congratualtions on all your success. Now stop reading and "get'ta editing".

    1. Thanks, Jag!

I love it when people mention a minor character they were particularly taken with. You're one of a select few who've mentioned Harry. :) I'm fond of him, too - he has a good heart.

I think it's quite understandable that you feel that way about Charlie. Amy sometimes surprises even me with what she's capable of!

Yes, yes, back to editing now...

  14. Shayne I found Sentence of Marriage free for my Kindle. I couldn't put it down. I loved it so much. I bought the other 3 in the series. I just finished Mud and Gold. I love Lizze and Amy so much. I love reading about both of their lives. I can't wait to read more about their lives. I hate Charlie, he is a monster. I love Frank, he is a wonderful man. I hope Amy will have a happy ending. She deserves it! Thanks so much for writing such a wonderful series.

    1. That's great to hear, Carmen! I'm very fond of my characters (most of them, anyway), and it's lovely to hear that you are, too.

"Settling the Account" has some of my favourite parts. I hope you enjoy it.

  15. Shayne I loved loved loved all 4 books. I have to admit I wanted Amy to stay on the farm. I'm from a small city in Eastern Kentucky. The 2010 census said we have 669 people in Betsy Layne Kentucky. So since I can't imagine living anywhere else. I really wanted Amy to stay with all her family and friends. I was happy that she was finally free from Charlie. I understood him a lot better after he talked to her on his deathbed. It made me feel a little sorry for him. I can't wait for your final book in the series. I will check back often to see when it is released...Have a great weekend! Thank you so much, best books I have read since Twilight Series...

    1. Your little town sounds a bit like Ruatane!

Amy will always feel a tie to her home, as she has so many loved ones there. She'll certainly go and visit them every year. But she does have to divide her time carefully.

  16. Shayne -

This is not a comment I expect you to answer, I certainly want you to continue your editing process :) However, I want you to know that I am now saying things like "Isn't it Just!" and after a lenghty explaination, i end with "That's all". The other day my husband said something smart to me and said to him 'Don't make me go wild on you". Poor guy didn't know if he wanted me to "go wild" or not
    (HA!).
I have not had the desire to bake bread as another reader did - thank heavens!

My,my Mrs. Parkinson, you are changing the way I speak!

Just a bit of silliness. But this stuff is happening...

Have a great stress free week and weekend!
